Fencing

One of the lesser known sports at the Olympic Games is  fencing .  Our boys were aware of all sports and fencing was not going to be less. Cobito has always been fascinated by the whole world of swords since he read the work of  Alexandre Dumas,  "The Three Musketeers" .  The work tells the exploits of a young D'Artagnan who, saying goodbye to his parents, left his house to go to Paris, in search of honors and adventures. The d'artagnan only had his horse with him, a precious sword that his father had given him, and a handful of coins. The journey was very long until he reached Paris and on the way he met some knights with whom he had to fight. D'Artagnan he was brave and  daringI feared no one. When he got to Paris he went to meet Mr. Treville who was the captain of the musketeers. He d´artagnan soon he met the three most famous musketeers of Paris: Athos, Porthos and Aramis with whom he at first had several  clashes . In those days, people were  very easily offended  and when this happened they fought duels  using swords. This happened to d'Artagnan with the three musketeers. The day he had arranged to fight with them, about 15 of Cardinal Richeliu's guards appeared.
-What are you doing, musketeers? Are you going to duel? Don't you know it's forbidden?
Cardinal Richeliu's guards and Mr. Treville's musketeers couldn't see each other, they got along fatally. But DÁrtagnan could not imagine that this exchange of  taunts  would end in a...full-fledged confrontation!  The marimorena was armed!  DÁrtagnan did not think twice, he drew his sword and began to fight alongside the three musketeers, putting their rivals to flight. And from this anecdote, the motto of  One for all and all for one rose!  which refers to the importance of teamwork and collaboration between one another to get things done.  (Adaptation The Three Musketeers.  Alexandre Dumas )

See chapter of the previous fragment.

fencing
Fencing is an elegant sport, for both men and women, dating back to very remote times: the ancient Egyptians already fought with wooden sticks. It consists of a  combat  between two people, with a bladed weapon  (foil, sword or saber)  and on a rectangular court. The purpose is to touch the rival with the look of the weapon in certain parts of the body. He tries to dodge the attack and counterattack. Fencers earn one point for each hit. The first to add 15 hits wins the match. In fencing  , concentration  and strength are important. Fencers must have good  reflexes  and good technique, and must be able to detect their opponent's weak points in order to plan the attack.
Fencing is one of the eight sports included in the first Olympic Games of the Modern Era in 1896. It is the only Olympic sport of Spanish origin.
Fencing in English is  "fencing".

fencing equipment

MASK. -  That protects the face with a stainless steel mesh on the front and a canvas chin strap for the neck.
GLOVE.-  Leather or reinforced fabric to protect the armed hand. It usually has an extension that covers the forearm to prevent the weapon from entering the sleeve.
A WHITE SUIT.-  consisting of pants and jacket. The pants go up to the knees and the jackets are generally made of  Kevlar , which is the material used in bulletproof vests.
WHITE SOCKS AND  special SNEAKERS with reinforcements on the sides.

tracks

The fencing track is about 14 meters long and 2 meters wide. It is divided into three parts, center line, guard line and warning line. If a shooter crosses the warning line, the referee calls "stop."

The referee
  • "On guard".-  The shooters will be placed on the guard line. This happens whenever a raid is started and after a raid.
  • "Prepared".-  Once the shooters are on guard, the voice is given having to respond to the shooters; In case of no answer, it is considered affirmative.
  • "Forward".-  When the players are on guard and ready, the assault begins.
  • "Stop".-  The match is stopped with the call of "Stop" by the main referee after a hit. In this case, the  shooters  are placed on the guard lines.
What do we have to learn to start?

1. The greeting.  To indicate respect towards the opponent and sport. At the beginning and end of all combats and lessons.
  • Stand upright with heels together at right angles.
  • The view directed at the person receiving the greeting. The weapon is directed from the point on the ground to the blade on the chin, the  mask  under the unarmed arm.
  • The armored arm ends under the mask.
See Video Motor task 1: practice the greeting several times until it comes out well

2. The Guard.-   "Prepare for attack, counterattack and defense" the initial position of assault.

When: at the start or after the completion of any of the fencing actions.
  •  Legs:   Tip of the foot, knee, hip and armed arm in the same direction.
  •  Feet  shoulder width apart. Leading foot directed towards the opponent and trailing foot open (90º angle).
  •  Knees  flexed.
  •  Weapon Arm:   Stance of a bent weapon arm holding the weapon without pressing and the point directed at the opponent.
  • Unarmed arm:  Shoulder relaxed arm above shoulder with elbow bent and hand resting  ( like a scorpion's tail
Motor task: practice the guard position several times until it goes well.

3. Movements: MARCH, BREAK, FUND AND ARROW.

With the displacements we intend to create a suitable distance to touch our opponent. This must be during the entire round as an attack or as preparation for the attack. It is necessary to maintain the balance between the two legs (like sitting on a chair). Avoid raising the hip during the movement.
  • In  MARCH , move the front foot looking for the ground with the heel, without dragging feet and push with the rear foot.
  • In the BREAK ,  move the back foot looking with the toe and then the heel, without dragging feet.
  • BACKGROUND . - Movement of attack, explosive and more used to touch the opponent, movement of the armed arm extending forward, throwing the front leg and the ankle a little below the height of the knee. The back leg is fully extended. The body as vertical as possible and the rear arm is extended parallel to the extended leg.

  • ARROW .- Throw the body forward, letting the weight fall on the front leg, remaining flexed. The weapon arm in line with the blade, fully extended, points towards the target. Finally, to prevent the fall, the previously backward leg will occupy a forward position to regain balance.

This element consists of carrying out an imbalance of the body forward, letting the weight fall on the front leg, remaining flexed.

defenses

Motor task: practice moving forwards and backwards, the bottom and the arrow several times until it goes well.

4. The targets

Look at the following illustration. Depending on which weapon we use, we can touch one part of the body or another. In the foil only the trunk, in the sword in the whole body and in the saber trunk and mask.
We will only play with the white of the foil.

The fencing lines divide the opponent's valid target into 4 imaginary portions.
Depending on where we want to hit, our  armed hand  will take one position or another.
Note that the external zone is the zone in which we have the foil. If we are left-handed, it would be the left zone.

Foil.

5.Hand Actions

The hand can take a total of 8 positions. These can be classified according to whether we put our fingers up  (supination)  or down  (pronation).

  • Supination: sixth, fourth, eighth and seventh.
  • Pronation: third, fifth, second and first.

Do you remember the lines that we saw a little above?

These divide the body into four areas with two perpendicular imaginary lines, one that runs through the spine and the other goes horizontally at chest height, depending on the area that we want to touch, the hand adopts 8 positions. They can also be classified into:

  1. Outside high line: sixth and third positions.
  2. Internal high line: fourth and fifth positions.
  3. Outside low line: eighth and second positions.
  4. Internal low line: seventh and first positions.

Women's world championship final

The video is narrated in English, don't worry, the important thing here are two things: watch how they play and what single words you can understand. Cheer up!

LEARNING TASKS
  1. Perform a  foil  with the help of your parents. The best material to do it is the churro to learn to swim (it is a soft material). You can also do it with  polyethylene insulation that is used in heating and plumbing.
  2. Here are some ideas with other material for its preparation:
    1. Video 1.
    2. Video 2.
  3. Engine tasks:
    1. Practice greeting.
    2. Study and learn the "On Guard" position.
    3. Practice displacements:
      1. From "On Guard" move forward. (to march)  and retreat  (to break).
      2. Practice attack moves. The background and the arrow.
    4. Familiarize yourself with the foil.
    5. With a lob, hit the lob with the foil and practice the various hand positions.
    6. Hit the balloon with the foil while practicing the movements.
    7. Same as above but hit the balloon only with the tip of the sword.
    8. With a partner, try to steal the balloon.
    9. couples. duel. Each one with a balloon, they try to steal the other's balloon while keeping their own in the air. Whoever falls to the ground loses. He then turns to guard position.
    10. On a sheet of paper with the following drawing. Stick it on a door, wall, tree...
      1. From short distance, touch the third sector.
      2. Touch with step forward to the third sector, guard and step back.
      3. Bottom to fourth sector, break and guard.
      4. Touch sector two with arrow.
      5. Go two or three steps forward and touch down.
      6. On guard, advance two steps with armed arm in line, break, advance again and bottom.
      7. Make rolls with the correct guard position.
      8. Move towards the opponent without crossing the legs and keeping the armed arm in line.
      9. Block partner's sword and move back (break) correctly. If someone is tagged, the fight is stopped and the guard position is returned to the start. So always.
      10. We remember that to attack:
      • Outside high line: sixth and third positions.
      • Internal high line: fourth and fifth positions.
      • Outside low line: eighth and second positions.
      • Internal low line: seventh and first positions.
Foil.

In couples.

To relax at the end of the day:

Do the following yoga exercises this week before going to bed.
